Here I am, back from three lovely nights in France. As always, we spent New Year with friends, barely stepping outside the door except to replace broken kettles and buy more food. This trip's technical highlight: Guitar Hero (sad fact: when in one's mid-forties and not sober, one will find it harder to learn to play even fake guitar or drums than the average ten year old) on Wii. This year's amusement highlight: a cornichon eating contest between one of our friends and his 11 year old son. Son: 14 - Dad:46 in a minute and a half, with no returns. Spectacular.
Books read so far this year: the second half of "Greenmantle" by John Buchan, and "The Feathered Serpent" by Edgar Wallace, both in a lovely boxed set of vintage repro adventure stories (having read"Bulldog Drummond" and the first half of "Greenmantle" yesterday).
At lunch, we wandered into St.Valaire, a nearby town, for moules frites, and had a short, cold walk round the town, finding a monument to Guillame de Normande embarking to conquer England in 1066 (interesting to read things from the other side) and a gate in a wall that apparently dates from around that time too. A thousand year old gate; that really is old.
And now, I am back home, and writing this quickly while everyone else finally goes to bed, far too late in many cases. New year's resolutions: write a blog, write a novel, get the house on the market. That should be enough to keep me going. I wonder if there's any hope of doing any of them?
